Women’s Sports are on the Rise - Don’t Miss a #moment
By Kelley Stump Jones
Memories of the day my team won the B1G Field Hockey Tournament are still vivid. As the final minutes of the championship game ticked down, I could feel my team’s energy and excitement rising. Our two-goal lead held, and we beat conference rival Maryland 3-1, giving Northwestern its first conference tournament title in nearly two decades. This was the most unforgettable and defining moment in my career as a Wildcat.
But I'm one of thousands of student-athletes who have similar experiences every year. Each season, there are incredible female athletes competing at all collegiate levels from coast-to-coast, breaking records, winning championships, and making history in their own unique and meaningful ways. The only downside is that the number of people who get to share in these moments is limited to the athletes and coaches, and perhaps family and fans, who are able to travel to games.
But this is changing, and it's exciting to see that women's sports are in higher demand than ever, and that there's increasing opportunity for wider audiences to watch, engage and support these impressive athletes.
Here are a few compelling trends:
- “The Women's College World Series three-game championship series between Oklahoma and Florida State averaged 1.84 million viewers on ESPN — up 15% from 2019. More people watched Game 2 of that series than the Islanders-Bruins NHL playoff game on NBCSN that same day.” (North Jersey)
- “The pipeline of talent for women’s professional sports is growing at 6x the rate of the men’s pipeline.” (The Fan Project)
- “A survey across eight key markets around the world (U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia and New Zealand) found that 84% of sports fans are interested in women’s sports. Of those, 51% are male, which confirms that women’s sports engage a gender-balanced audience.” (Nielsen)
It’s my hope that women’s sports - at all levels - continue to become more widely accessible so that the achievements of female athletes everywhere can inspire future generations.
This is why I’m thrilled to be a part of the team at WePlayed Sports that’s striving to support student-athletes of all types, equally, through short-form video #moments. Our #moments celebrate student-athletes across a growing number of divisions and sports, so fans won’t miss a second of the action.
At WePlayed, we are propelled by the simple belief that every #moment of every game contains a story - and it’s our mission to bring those stories to life through short-form video. Every #moment counts - for every student-athlete - let's make sure we don't miss them.
